The challenge of open adoptions

Home / Blog / The challenge of open adoptions

Open adoption is the type of adoption in which both the adoptive and the birth parents have some information about each other.  Today, open adoption varies greatly on the degree of “openness.” Some birth parents only know about the adopters through books and photographs containing their name and description, while some may actually be in communication with them.

The varying degree of openness can pose problems for adoption agencies, social workers, and even the adoptive and birth parents involved in an open adoption. Disagreements are likely to arise when discussing sensitive issues such as the amount of personal information shared between the birth and the adoptive parents and the frequency of contact between them.

Intricacies surrounding open adoption may be very difficult to understand and navigate without the help of experienced lawyers.
