Divorce isn’t caused by living together before marriage, study says

A study conducted by an associate professor revealed cohabiting does not increase the risk of divorce, The Huffington Post reported on Tuesday, March 11.

Associate professor Arielle Kuperberg from the University of North Carolina studied data from the National Survey of Family Growth and found that living together does not increase the likelihood of getting divorced. She emphasized that what really increases the possibility of a divorce is the age at which couples get married. Young couples, according to her findings, are more likely to get divorced.

Experts say better economy has resulted in higher divorce rate

The improving economy has prompted a higher number of divorces in the country, Bloomberg News reported on Tuesday, February 18.

In an interview, chief economist of Moody’s Analytics Inc. Mark Zandi stated that an improving economy allows couples who have postponed divorce due to difficult economic times to take action. An adviser to the Federal Reserve Bank and a professor at Marquette University in Milwaukee added that as the economy gets better and home prices are starting to rise, couples who have put-off divorce might finally decide to get a divorce, as dividing the property’s proceeds would give them bigger room to start all over again, this time separately.

Attractive wife leads to stronger marriage, study suggests

A study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology concludes that, for men, an attractive wife leads to a more satisfying marriage.

The study was designed to determine if a partner’s attractiveness contributed toward having a more satisfying union by monitoring 450 newly-married couples for four years. It discovered that men married to an attractive spouse tend to be more committed to their marriage and are more concerned with satisfying their wife’s needs. Consequently, a good-looking wife was found to be more satisfied because of a “happier” husband.
