Missing woman could be a victim of domestic violence

Authorities are searching for a League City woman after she went missing last week.

According to the police, the missing woman was identified as a 32-year-old Anne-Christine Johnson. She is a mother of two and a cocktail waitress at the Legends in League City. Initial reports say that Johnson was last seen a week ago wearing an overcoat and pink scarf. She was reportedly in a white sedan traveling along Chesterfield Lane with a male companion. The identity of the man was not determined.

On December 8, her father filed a missing report after Johnson did not show up to meet him for dinner. Preliminary investigations show clues that the disappearance of Johnson seems suspicious, suggesting the victim may have been a victim of domestic violence.

Degrees of Separation film could be used as training tool for domestic violence cases

An Australian short film on domestic violence entitled ‘Degrees of Separation’ was aired for the first time at a conference for family law professionals in Brisbane last weekend.

Melbourne barrister Darren Mort funded the $15,000 project himself to explore the situations and circumstances surrounding family violence victims, such as keeping their ordeals a secret and living in denial. Mort, who is also involved in the Victorian Safe Steps Family Violence Response Centre, said he hopes his film will make a difference.

Lilia Szarski, a Relationships Australia mediation trainer, said the film demonstrated the compelling need to open a discussion on how to recognise domestic violence “and why do we don’t do anything about it.” Visiting US forensic psychologist Phil Stahl, a member of the US National Judicial College said, “This film can help educate judges both on the secrecy element of domestic violence and the powerfulness of domestic violence,” he said. The film is set to be publicly released next year.

Unfortunately, it is all too common that victims of domestic violence are poorly represented legally. If you are the victim of family violence, the attorneys at BB Law Group PLLC can help. Call us at (832) 534-2589 to consult about your case and see how you can begin taking legal action.

Jeremy Renner finalizes divorce

Famous Hollywood actor Jeremy Renner finalized his divorce on December 28. The actor was married for 10 months to 23-year-old model Sonni Pacheco before she filed for divorce back in December 2014, citing irreconcilable differences. The 44-year-old actor and Pacheco have a 2-year-old daughter named Ava.

According to the reports by People, Renner has been ordered to make monthly payments of $13,000 for child support. Additionally, five percent of the excess in his annual income will be provided for his daughter. Pacheco will not be receiving spousal support due to the prenuptial agreement that was signed in 2013. Renner will retain almost all of his properties, including his motorcycle collection.

According to some sources, Renner accused Pacheco of failing to adequately care for their daughter, claiming she would often choose to attend parties and consume alcohol instead of taking care of Ava.

The two were embroiled in a controversial custody battle before the announcement of the finalized divorce.

Fleetwood originally cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for the separation.

The two tied the knot in 1995, and have two children together, Ruby and Tessa, who are twins.

Fogle and McLaughlin’s divorce finalized

Subway’s former spokesperson, 38-year-old Jared Fogle, and Kathleen McLaughlin have been granted a divorce by a Boon County judge after a five year marriage. The divorce was finalized on November 16, just three days before Fogle was sentenced to prison for pedophilia-related crimes.

The divorce was filed by McLaughlin back in August following the breaking news of a scandal surrounding Fogle’s sexual crimes. The former Subway pitchman, who rose to fame after losing a significant amount of weight on an all-Subway diet in 1999, was sentenced to more than fifteen years in Englewood’s Federal Correctional Institution after pleading guilty to engaging in sexual relationships with two minors and victimizing twelve others. He also pleaded guilty to distributing child pornography.

The court documents also include a September filing from McLaughlin contesting Fogle’s request to spend time with their two young children.

Mr. Bean star divorces wife of 24 years

On November 10, the district judge at the Central Family Court in London finally granted a decree nisi to Rowan Atkinson, of the Mr. Bean and Blackadder fame, and his wife Sunetra. The couple has reportedly been separated since 2014. The two were married for 24 years and have two children together.

Sunetra Atkinson cited her husband’s “unreasonable behavior” in their separation, although details were not given. The ex-couple were allegedly building a home together when they decided to separate, and the two have been living in their own London homes ever since.

While the decree nisi represents a step towards the resolution of this separation, the divorce will not be finalized until either party applies for a decree absolute. Typically, a person may apply for a decree absolute six weeks after the grant of decree nisi. The time delay allows further discussion of finances and other issues between the husband and the wife.

Even divorces that do not take place in the public eye are incredibly difficult. At the BB Law Group PLLC, our attorneys in The Woodlands are prepared to help you work through this process as painlessly as possible. Call us today at (832) 534-2589 to learn more.

Actor Guy Pearce and wife Kate Mestitz split

Guy Pearce, 48-year-old British-Australian actor of Memento fame, announced on October 13 that he and his psychologist wife, Kate Mestitz are divorcing after eighteen years of marriage. Pearce posted the announcement online, confirming rumors that have been circling about the couple’s status, and revealed that he and Mestitz have actually been separated since January of this year.

Pearce is known to keep his personal life private, so it was not surprising that the actor did not provide a reason for the separation. The now ex-couple met back in 1980 and had been married for eighteen years after tying the knot in 1997.

The divorce was amicable, according to reports and Pearce himself. The actor had nothing but kind words for his ex-wife in posts made to his social media accounts after news of the divorce broke.
